The Tacx bio bottle is made of biodegradable polyethylene that decomposes in a landfill. This unique material offers dual disposal options. Firstly, the bottle can be easily recycled by placing it in the plastics bin, ensuring a 100% recycling rate. Alternatively, when the bottle finds its way to a landfill or becomes lost amidst the beauty of nature, its biodegradability comes into play.
The biodegradability is achieved by adding a bio-batch to the PE material that changes the molecular structure of the bottle. This had no effect on the use of the bottle until it ends up in a landfill. Under the influence of heat and humidity, which is often present in landfills, the bio-batch is activated. Consequently, the bottle decomposes over time into water, humus, and gas, without leaving behind harmful microplastics like oxo-biodegradable materials.
The entire composting process in a landfill takes about one to five years while natures’s pace will take longer. Additionally, the gas released during decomposition can be recaptured for use as an energy source, further contributing to sustainability efforts.
